Dr. James Bishop is an educational psychologist and professional counselor based in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Although primarily person-centered in his therapeutic philosophy, Dr. Bishop takes an integrative approach to treating the presenting issues of his clients. Techniques utilized by Dr. Bishop in a counseling setting include cognitive behavioral, humanistic, existential, and gestalt therapy.
Dr. Bishop has two master’s degrees in professional counseling and professional development from Amberton University and a Ph.D. in educational psychology from the University of North Texas. He is board-certified by the National Board for Certified Counselors and licensed by the state of Texas.
Dr. Bishop specializes in serving the social and emotional needs of gifted children, adolescents, and adults through his private practice in Frisco, Texas. Dr. Bishop’s doctoral coursework focused on the study of giftedness – specifically the social and emotional needs of gifted individuals and the phenomenon of giftedness in adulthood. His doctoral dissertation explored the dangers of misdiagnosis of gifted youth in counseling settings and provided the first scientific evidence to justify the concern of misdiagnosis among the population. Dr. Bishop is active in the community of “Gifted and Talented” researchers and educators and served as the chair of the “Social and Emotional Development Network” for the National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC) from 2019-2021.

Will Durant
Dr. Bishop’s scholarship includes the study of historian and philosopher Will Durant, the recipient of the Pulitzer Prize and the Presidential Medal of Freedom and one of the most celebrated historians of twentieth century.
Dr. Bishop is the co-producer and editor of the documentary A Visit with Will and Ariel Durant (2003), the producer and editor of the short film Will Durant on Equality (2016), the editor of the annotated edition of Durant’s Philosophy and the Social Problem (2007), and from 2001 to 2012 was a principal member and communications director of the now-inactive Will Durant Foundation.

Bruce Lee
Dr. Bishop is one of the leading authorities in the world on the philosophy and writing of Bruce Lee. He was recognized by the Bruce Lee Educational Foundation in 2000 with an award for his philosophical essay titled, “On Totality”.
He is the author of the books Bruce Lee: Dynamic Becoming (2004), Who Wrote the Tao? The Literary Sourcebook for the Tao of Jeet Kune Do (2023), and Remembering Bruce Lee: His Enduring Legacy and Inspiration (2024).
On the subject of Bruce Lee and martial arts, Dr. Bishop has written for Black Belt, Inside Kung Fu, Bruce Lee: The Official Publication of the Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do Nucleus, Original Jeet Kune Do Quarterly, Martial Arts Legends, and Bruce Lee Mania magazines.
Dr. Bishop is also the producer and director of the 2020 documentary, Building the Bridge: The Bruce Lee Philosophy Lectures in Ireland.
